Project: Music guessing game
Year: 2020
Role: Game Designer
At Encore, we wanted to lighten up the mood during lockdown and create a social game to promote music and social engagement.
At some point when the pandemic guidelines allowed we had a little Encore team retreat. The founders decided it’d be fun to run an hackathon - the idea was for it to be related to Encore but not addressing anything that we were currently working on or prioritising.
Just a hackathon?
Songlio was a hackathon project - thought of in one day and designed and developed in another. But I also think it was a lot more than that.
Challenge:
It was my first time having a go at designing a game. I had to do a lot of speedy researching and get my brain working through new kinds of ways. Suddenly it's not about usability as much as it is reward and delight.
Reflection:
I like to include this project in my case studies as a reminder that sometimes a mix of fun and team collaboration can create innovation much faster than just relying on specialist training.
Also, a reminder that you shouldn't be afraid to experiment, to pivot and venture out when everything seems too much of a priority to make the time (because it will always feel that way).
Since launch, Songlio has averaged 385 players every day, with a peak of 1535 users in a single day!
Usage data
We even experienced a bit of organic virality: 52,500 views, 6480 likes of #songlio on TikTok (@msjungstechtips)
